    Applying vacuum in process industries
The main task of the vacuum pump is to pump the leakage air, evacuate the inert gases, loaded with some vapours and control the base pressure. The condenser pumps the main part of the vapour. Therefore, the actual amount of condensable pumped by the vacuum pump strongly varies with the operating conditions. Also adjustment between condenser and pump influence the vapour concentration in the pump. The deviations in real operation often result in a much higher vapour concentration than expected in the selection. That is an essential difference between vacuum pumps in chemical process and the usage in other applications, because the selection of the pumps is dominated by the pumping of vapours’ and vapour mixtures ...

Effect of a rod promoter on velocity in a square gas-solid fluidized bedGas-solid fluidized bed is characterized by the formation of bubbles, channels and slugs. The expansion beyond the point of incipient fluidization is primarily due to the gas bubbles. Experiments were carried out extensively to study the effectiveness of rod promoter in reducing bed fluctuation in gas-solid fluidized bed. The correlations for the bed fluctuation ratio and the bed expansion ratio were developed for the un-promoted rod promoted squared bed. The calculated values of bed expansion ratio and the bed fluctuation ratio by the developed correlations agree fairly well their respective experimental values. The effect of a rod promoter on minimum fluidization velocity in a square gas-solid fluidized bed has been studied. ....

Enhanced power generation in microbial based biological fuel cell using methylene blue as an electronophore
Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are special types of biofuel cells, producing electric power by employing microorganisms instead of isolated enzymes, to assist redox reactions. In this work, methylene blue (MB) was utilized as an electron mediator in microbial fuel cell (MFC) consuming glucose to study both its efficiency during electricity generation and its role in growth and metabolism of Klebsiella pneumoniae. In this study, the variation of open circuit potential (OCP), biomass growth curve, current density and power density with time was recorded. It is proved that the addition of mediator will enhance the power output and the role of electronophore (ie) methylene blue on the performance of MFCs in generating electric current was investigated. ...

Salt effect on the enthalpy of mixing of methanol + ethyl acetate at 303.15 K
The effect of the dissolved salts, namely NaCl, CaCl2, ZnCl2, CdCl2 and NH4Cl on the endothermic enthalpy of mixing of the binary system methanol + ethyl acetate has been investigated at 303.15 K in an isothermal batch calorimeter with vapour space. The salt NaCl and NH4Cl decrease the endothermic value. A shift in peak towards higher mole fraction of methanol is noticed on addition of 5% ZnCl2 and CdCl2. The experimental values of the enthalpy of mixing were fitted into a modified Redlich - Kister equation and deviations and parameters are reported. ...

Zero liquid effluent discharge system through thermal route
Separation of water can be done by Reverse Osmosis or thermal method. RO is cheaper in terms of operating cost but the life of system is low and replacement cost is high. More importantly RO cannot separate all recyclable water. Whereas, thermal methods involving an evaporator can recover almost all water. Though this method incurs high-energy costs, which however can be substantially reduced by a Multiple Effect Evaporator. ...

First ever floating barge mounted low temperature thermal desalination plant
Water seems to be an abundant natural resource on planet earth. However, only 0.3 per cent of the world’s total amount of water can be used as clean drinking water. Man requires huge amounts of drinking water everyday and extracts it form nature for innumerable purposes. As natural fresh water resources are limited, seawater plays an important part as a source for drinking water as well. In order to use this water it has to be desalinated. Seawater desalination is a real challenge. The base method for seawater desalination is distillation. Approximately 620 kWh of evaporation enthalpy is necessary to obtain 1 t of drinking water. ...

A novel technique for phenolic wastewater treatment
Fresh water crisis and its degradation due to contamination by industrial and municipal waste are highlighted. Phenol is one of the most common contaminant, the methods of treatment of phenolic wastewater is discussed and the emphasis is given on the aerobic biological treatment. Special attention has been paid to the biological treatment mentioning the drawbacks of the traditional methods. The relative advantages of various modern bioreactors working on immobilization technique have been projected. The uniqueness of the fluidized and semi-fluidized bed bioreactors in the treatment of wastewater has been emphasized.

Novel sorbitol resin based polymeric surfactant for liquid detergent
A novel polymeric surfactant based on linseed oil, sorbitol and rosin has been synthesized. Technically it is a rosinated short oil alkyd resin. In this piece of research work, the mole ratio of ingredients, catalyst and heating schedule has been standardized to get an alkyd resin with higher acid value (>50), desired hydrophilic-lipophilic ratio (HLB),viscosity and solubility characteristic. The spectroscopic studies indicate the presence of free acid, ester, ether and free hydroxyl groups in the polymer structure. This resin after neutralization with sodium hydroxide has been used as a replacement of sodium lauryl ether sulphate (SLES) in liquid detergents.

    Process Safety management
The general practice among the Indian industries is to measure the safety performance through indicators such as frequency rate, severity rate, safe-T score etc. However, the companies are soon realizing that a clean record of no lost time injuries (LTIs) does not guarantee an environment devoid of any process hazards. Hence, there is a remarkable shift in the general outlook by industries from “personal safety” (LTI etc) to “process safety”

Water spray support for efficiency enhancement of air-cooled heat exchangers by mist creation
Globally, there is a growing need for both electric power and water. The acute scarcity of water may lead to conflict between water for power plant cooling requirements and water for other uses such as agricultural, residential, or environmental. Hence, there is a huge inclination towards use of Dry Cooling (air cooling) as an attractive alternative to the use of Wet Cooling - basically on the grounds of water conservation. It is well known that Dry Cooling on one hand will substantially reduce the need of water in process/power plants. On the other hand, it can cause reductions in plant efficiency and out-put during hottest periods of the year.

    Divided wall distillation column
The separation of liquid mixture into various components is one of the major operation in the process industries and distillation the most widely used method of achieving this end is the key operation in any oil refinery. In processing the demand for purer product, coupled with the need for greater efficiency has promoted continued research into the technique of distillation. Divided wall distillation column offer improved thermodynamic efficiency at low cost, as they are compact. For a given amount of feed divided wall column require less reflux than conventional towers allowing for increase in capacity energy saving and less working cost.
